A Thousand Splendid Suns

“A Thousand Splendid Suns is a 2007 novel by Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini. It is not only a novel about the plight of an eastern woman. It is also a book about war, hunger, poverty. About the time when at one point a person’s life can collapse and if yesterday you were a doctor or a builder, tomorrow you are at best a mere man without a name and title. It was in this situation that the main characters came. And most importantly, they not only survived, but still retained the purest and brightest qualities such as love, kindness, compassion. The novel tells about two Afghan girls, each of which has passed its difficult way. Mariam and Leila are two main characters, two different women (both by origin and social status) and destinies, two shining suns that have been curbed by the bloody events taking place in Afghanistan. The war united two women and, despite the exploding bombs, the shots, the heroines were able to find what they had always dreamed of – love and support. This is a piercing book full of drama. The novel makes the heart constantly shudder from the exploding mines and the life of the people.
